As we prepare to celebrate Father’s Day this upcoming Sunday, we are reminded of the origin of Father’s Day nearly 100 years ago.

According to Examiner.com, Father’s Day started just a few years after Mother’s Day. In 1909, Sonora Smart Dodd attended a Mother’s Day service at her church in Spokane, Washington. Dodd’s own mother had passed away and she began to think of how grateful she was to her father for all he had done for her. His birthday was in June, so she decided to hold the first Father’s Day celebration on June 19, 1910 in Spokane.

In 1926, the National Father’s Day Committee formed in New York. In 1956, Father’s Day was recognized by a Joint Resolution of Congress. Finally in 1972, President Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father’s Day. It was to be held on the third Sunday of June.

Dad deserves our recognition and admiration just as much as he did almost a century ago!
